...with pop quizzes every moment. How apt, then, that the theme of Crouching Tiger should be teaching. In this war of the generations, the adults are as eager to instruct the young as the kids are to rebel against authority. In life as in martial arts, knowledge is power. And only the most powerful, like Chow's Mubai, can share it. He hopes to share it with Jen. Teaching this bright, willful girl is as close as he will come to fatherhood--even if the job carries fatal risks...

Rodriguez lent me the thing, which is roughly the size of a paperback novel. It has a short, ugly black antenna that screws on. For power, you can plug it into the wall or use a battery pack. It's simple to operate: you flip a switch, and the appliance does its thing, obliterating cellular transmissions in an area comparable to a medium-size movie theater. ...brawl, in Brownsville. Zab's dad Yoel--a world-champion kickboxer--raised him and his six brothers alone, losing none to prison or drugs, infusing all with a deep sense of his Israelite religion (a form of Judaism) and teaching them to box. Zab, with his speed and power, proved best, racking up an amateur record of 110-5. "My father is my idol," Zab says, meaning that while he now drives a Mercedes and wears diamond studs, he still does the dishes at Dad's house...
