His references to the American talk-show host are sometimes obvious and self-conscious: in one recurring bit, a postman drops off letters and Schmidt greets him, "Oh, look, the letterman." More often he simply copies Letterman's style, from the slicing hand gestures to the comedy sketches featuring crew members to the overelaborate jokes based on the day's headlines. Please don't mistake my argument for a Gingrich-esque nostalgic diatribe. Nor do I mean to present an overly romanticized portrait of Main Street USA complete with smiling postman and a penny candy store. Rather, in an age when the preservation, maintenance and respect of cultures are exalted in academia and elsewhere, I find it odd that the American small town has not been privileged with the same endangered status afforded to other components of American multiculturalism. If we are not careful, gossipy barber shops and other Main Street institutions will find themselves relegated to historical theme parks...

...inevitable: turn out enough garbage in the guise of movies, laced with foul-mouthed dialogue, and you have the best ingredients to ensure a successful failure. Il Postino (The Postman), a simple film with a simple plot, superbly acted, is sound proof that great films can be made and be profitable. Yet the industry continues to churn out products that seem to be based solely on special effects. At least someone in the industry has heard the wake-up call, through their bank account.
