Before his visit to Turkey, we examined Pope Benedict XVI's controversial remarks on Islam. Our readers looked beyond a clash of civilizations and encouraged soul searching among all faiths...
...landing party of Cortes (who pushed quickly through what remained of Mayan territory on his way to the bloody battle of Tenochtitlan), the man holding up the cross was no particular friend to the indians. It was not until 1537, Mann said, that, after considerable debate both ways, Pope Paul III got around to proclaiming that "Indians themselves indeed are true men" and should not be "deprived of their liberty." In the intervening 18 years roughly a third of Mexico's 25 million indigenous population died of smallpox the Europeans brought with them, and the Spanish had enslaved most...
...would be better if Pope Benedict XVI and other Christian leaders would seek open dialogue with Muslim clerics rather than confront them with inflammatory debate [Nov. 27]. Christianity and Islam have glorious yet violent pasts; both have lost their way with stubborn claims to exclusive truth and the consequent rise of intolerant fundamentalism. Distinguishing between different religions on the basis of reason shows a narrow understanding of other faiths. Gyan Ranjan Saha Calcutta Pope Benedict XVI's initiative...
...Ramadan is absolutely right when he says that Islam is already a European religion. I think there was after all a positive element to Pope Benedict's misleading remarks, as they opened the channel of communication between Islam and Christianity at all levels. As a Muslim I can only wish for Christians to be real Christians and Muslims to be real Muslims because then there will be no friction, as they all believe in having good relations with their neighbors. And what else is needed for a peaceful world other than supporting and working with one's neighbors, whether Muslims...
