...Republicans would carry California. Senator Hiram Johnson was sure of reelection, but since the New Deal had adopted him as a Democrat that will be an empty triumph for the G. O. P. Republican Acting Governor Frank Merriam, too, had a good chance of reelection. A Literary Digest poll last week showed him leading Upton Sinclair, 2½-to-1. But there, again, such an outcome would be due, not to Republican headwork, but to the jettisoning of Democratic Nominee Sinclair by the Democratic Administration in Washington...

...other professor is Frank W. Taussig '79, Henry Lee Higginson Professor of Economics, who has described Curley as a "blatant demagogue." The shift in sentiment is further borne out by the new results of the Faculty poll this morning. Bacon has a total of 311 votes while Curley has only 18. Thus the Faculty is supporting the Republican candidate by a vote of 18 to 1 while undergraduates voted only 7-1 in favor...
