A wiry, energetic West Pointer, General Spaatz directed the bombings that paved the Allied path from Africa to Sicily to Italy, then engineered the massive daylight bombardment of crucial German industrial targets. He later carried out the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after his opposition to the atomic bombing of cities had been overruled.
