This much bruited piece from England has been somewhat misrepresented by those who claimed for its distinction equivalent to its military counterpart, "Journey's End." Nor is the reason for its obvious discrepancies recondite. To use a too hackneyed phrase, the plot lacks human interest. Save for the casual friendship of the English and German Lieutenants upon which the action attempts to be based, there is little beyond its very real thrills and occasional humor to lend it coherence...
...story of a man's rise from a $35-a-week job at a stockyard to the position of king of bootleggers and his subsequent descent from this lofty position to the death house forms the plot of this picture. Few if any of the underworld's methods of self-advancement could have been left out in the telling of this tale. Crossing and double-crossing are apparently part of the daily business of the gunman. Of course, and enterprising reporter is also woven, into the story and, as usual, is "put on the spot" when he "learns too much...

The story is made valid by such details and is no less properly in the Hugo tradition if several of its episodes are entirely incredible, the plot tenuous. When the action makes orderly headway it is concerned with the difficulties that oppose the happiness of Miss Sidney and Gary Cooper, who works in a shooting gallery but later becomes a beer runner.
