...plot--something about computer geeks double-crossing one another--is of no consequence. The film is essentially about displaying the Angels in ways that are titillating to adolescent males, yet give their dates the impression that something inspiring is being said about female empowerment. It is, on both counts, just a tease. The best you can say for this version of Charlie's Angels is that it retains a sort of chipper, eerie good nature as it wastes the studio's money and our time...

...Mikels' movie may not have been the source for "Charlie's Angels," but it does have its own special charms, including a catchy, typically '70s horn-driven musical soundtrack and a supporting turn by the ever-vivacious Tura Satana (star of Russ Meyer's "Faster! ...mother and stepfather. Their acting efforts are helped immensely by Gray's direction. Gray paints every scene in order to give his crew a better idea of his visual style, and he has a definite vision of what the film should be all about, both in terms of plot and aesthetics. The Yards does have a certain edgy, rough, film-school feel to it, but in a lot of ways it's smoother and more assured than so many of the bigger studio releases it has to compete against...
