Jovial young Physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence has an 85-ton atom smasher at Berkeley, Calif. Intrigued by the Lawrence cyclotron, promoters of the Golden Gate International Exposition asked if they could borrow it to smash atoms for next year's fair. Physicist Lawrence, who was deep in experimentation, pointed to the protective wall of six-foot-high water tanks surrounding the cyclotron, explained that neutrons flying free as hail around an exhibition room might settle in the tissues of spectators, even render them sterile. The exposition officials hastily retired, and last fortnight they hatched plans to exhibit a model...
...Physicist Lawrence and his brother, Physician John Hundale Lawrence, soon discovered that neutron rays directed at animals act with much greater force and selectivity than X-rays, are five times more lethal for tumor tissue than X-rays but in tumor-killing doses considerably easier on normal tissue...
...first thought the idea of a physicist and an historian thrashing out a common subject over a conference table seems rather futile. Yet last year there was a highly successful discussion in Eliot House comparing the scientific method with that of the social sciences. Perhaps more feasible, however, is a joint discussion among kindred fields. Next week, for instance, the tutors and tutees in History, History-Literature and Music will approach the question of patronage of the arts, presumably from three different points of view...
...June 1934 a distinguished Italian audience, including King Vittorio Emanuele, was told that Professor Enrico Fermi, theoretical and experimental physicist of the University of Rome, had artificially created a chemical element heavier than uranium...
Last week in Stockholm, the Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that this year's Nobel Prize for Physics would go to Professor Fermi. This highest honor a physicist can win is worth more than $40,000 at current exchange rates...
