...overall population, there may be things peculiar to a recession that are beneficial to health and cut mortality rates, even though some segments are at risk if they lose their jobs? That's one way to explain the difference. The other way to explain it is that the other finding didn't apply to the overall population - it just applied to the elderly, who for a variety of reasons, including improved care, appear to thrive during a downturn. The aggregate may be driven by these elderly, who aren't in the labor market and aren't affected by changes...

...During that long wait, I focused on the woefully underappreciated actor John Carroll Lynch. You might remember him from Fargo, in which he played Marge Gunderson's husband Norm, or Things We Lost in the Fire, in which he gave a compellingly tender and pleasingly peculiar performance as Halle Berry's neighbor. Love Happens is not his best work - that would probably be his chilling performance in Zodiac as the prime suspect Arthur Leigh Allen - but it's still pretty fine. Lynch has been working steadily since 1993, which was right about the time of Eckhart's first screen credit...

...while it’s always been a peculiar fact that the American people love and crave the same type of royalty their republic was created to reject, there is certainly something different about the way the media treats the current First Lady. Unlike Lady Bird, Pat, Betty, Rosalynn, Nancy, Barbara, Hillary, and Laura before her, Michelle is not just another political wife to be scrutinized excessively—she has been assigned the Jackie mystique, forced to represent the reincarnation of Camelot when she is in fact an emblem of an entirely different sort of era?...

Malaysia prides itself on being a multiethnic democracy where numerous religions coexist. But its reputation as a moderate Muslim-majority nation has been called into question by a monthlong controversy over whether a Muslim mother of two, Kartika Sari Dewi, should be whipped for a peculiar crime: drinking a beer in public. On Aug. 24, Kartika was due to become the first woman in Malaysia to be caned, after an Islamic court sentenced her in July to six lashes. But Islamic officials suddenly delayed the corporal punishment just hours before she was to endure the lashing...

White House Warriors I find it peculiar that Dick Cheney - who has never seen a battlefield in his life - would characterize Scooter Libby's plight as leaving a soldier on the battlefield [Aug. 3]. During the G.W. Bush Administration, I was struck by the fervor for military action from an inner circle who had largely not served in the U.S. armed forces. The odd man out during the drumbeat for war was Colin Powell, whose long military career included serving in Vietnam and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His voice of caution against entanglement in Iraq resulted...
