...housing industry is a significant part of the U.S. economy. New housing alone accounted for $32 billion, or 3% of the gross national product last year. It is also such a diverse business that its leaders rarely have an opportunity to meet and exchange views. The one common forum for top management is the Housing Industry Presidents Conference, which has been sponsored by Time Inc. since 1954. The conference brings together heads of trade associations and corporations, mortgage bankers and Government officials, for three days of frank, off-the-record discussion...
Explanations of the recent bombings of North Viet Nam came out in confused and misleading segments. First the heavy raids in the southern part of the country were billed as "protective reaction" to the downing of a U.S. reconnaissance plane. Then it was acknowledged that they were aimed at enemy supplies. First there was a denial of strikes farther north, with Defense Secretary Melvin Laird explaining that the bomb damage near Hanoi reported by the North Vietnamese may have been caused by their own missiles fired at U.S. planes. People do care now." Many wives take the Son Tay raid as an overdue sign of concern on the part of the U.S. Government; they also feel that it will buoy the morale of their imprisoned husbands. No one, however, is quite sure just how the prisoners will find out about the raid, for Hanoi has not specifically mentioned the rescue mission...
...bright, a high school graduate at 16, Sandy was in her third semester of pre-med courses at Wayne State last spring. For her 17th birthday, Garland used all his savings to buy her a red Volkswagen; he permitted her to drive it only to church, school and her part-time job as a dentist's aide. Though not a hippie, she had experimented with pot and mescaline. Once she and a friend, Donna Sue Potts, were discovered high on mescaline. Garland forbade his daughter to see her friend, but later he relented. Still, Sandy found life at home...
