Implacably pierced and outfitted in jewelry ranging from precious stones to human bones, the actors and actresses that populate the screen do so beautifully, in particular the lead Rudy Youngblood. The casting, unconventional and far from stereotypical Hollywood, is impeccable, as is the decision to have the characters speaking a Mayan dialect (no worries, this, like “The Passion of the Christ,” has English subtitles). In English, the movie would be ludicrous, but in Mayan the alien words contribute to the recreation of this long gone world...

...showing that girls fare poorly in co-ed schools: They are ignored, patronized, passed over; when teachers give girls personal attention, it is often about outfits and appearance; girls get good grades but poor scores on standardized tests; they have low self-esteem. In particular, it credits Arab novelists and filmmakers for publicizing women's suffering and offering models of hope. But in its conclusion, "Towards the Rise" recognizes the huge obstacles that remain. Unwilling to leave reform to government or Islamic leaders, the report calls for a "widespread and effective movement of struggle in Arab civil society" - a social revolution, really - to advance women's rights...
