Again, Harris' interviewers framed hypothetical situations. For example: "If you were a parent and had a son who came home from the Army and smoked marijuana, would you report him to the police or not?" By 42% to 40%, the answer was yes. On the other hand, in many categories there were big majorities against turning in the son: suburban residents, the under-30s, the college-educated, professional people, those earning over $10,000, westerners and Jews. Curiously, blacks would turn the son over to the police by a bigger margin than whites...
Into the System. The obvious solution is a vast upgrading of the city's public schools, but New York is too broke for that. As an alternative, New York's 15-unit City University (C.C.N.Y.'s parent) has an ambitious plan to enlarge community colleges and guarantee a crack at higher education for all comers by 1975. To that end, C.C.N.Y. has already admitted 732 less qualified students, who get special tutoring and then enter the regular undergraduate program if and when they qualify. Unfortunately, lack of money threatens both the long-range plan and the tutoring...

Although he is deeply hostile to questions about his personal life and refuses to say whether he is married and has children, Ginott's "empathy first" approach stems from solid clinical experience.
