...desert and found a modern hotel in the middle of nowhere, like a mirage. We went in for lunch. We were the only persons in the hotel, except for the staff. They had a canned music system, and when we entered, the desk clerk rushed to the sound control panel to turn on the stuff ("Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," a little oasis of song in the Sinai). He watched us intently, and as we passed from lobby to dining room, and I, eventually, to the men's room, the clerk switched on the speaker in that particular room...

...task. Having come into power believing this whole global warming thing was a left-wing conspiracy hatched while his family was out of power, Bush in April flatly rejected the Kyoto treaty that the international community had spent the best part of a decade negotiating. Last week, a scientific panel he'd commissioned gave the president some unwelcome findings: Global warming is, indeed, caused by human activity, and that needs to be urgently addressed. The confusion of "2024" permeates everything from overall themes to simple panel-to-panel tone inconsistencies. For example one panel reads, "These extremists threatened everything ... they had to be killed," followed immediately by "Fortunately, nobody took them seriously..." Believe me, the pictures don't makes this any more understandable...
