...weekend job hustling knockoff handbags with Haitian immigrants on the streets of Boston, speaks perfect faux Brooklyn: "This ain't like workin' the counter at CVS! You hustling, man ... That's street." Belsey's southern teaching assistant Smith J. Miller spends half of his appearances trying to explain "pah-point" (Power Point) presentations to the Luddite professor. More striking is Smith's ability to make her motley cast so much more than the caricatures they could become. Belsey's formidable African-American wife Kiki looms large. Her much-discussed 115-kg frame, once much smaller, practically becomes a character...

...German-American humorist: the phrase smacks of oxymoronality. The American expected to laugh at German-Americans (when he wasn't afraid of them), primed as he was with images of oom-pah-pah bands, clinking beer steins and Wagnerian sopranos of ample girth. It happened that Ted's father was co-owner of the Kalmbach and Geisel Brewery (later, and prudently, changed to the Liberty Brewing Company) in Springfield, Mass., and that his mother's measurements were an imposing six ft. and 200 lb. Stubble shows through sweat-beaded pancake as the transsexuals teeter in stiletto heels on the turf. Miss Nigeria has an Afro wig, Miss England a ball gown and crown. Miss Japan is mincing in a kimono. Miss America has a jerry-rigged hula skirt...

...Tennille, better known as half of '70s light-pop duo Captain and Tennille (of "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Muskrat Love" fame), is passable as Victoria but lacks the je ne sais quoi that would justify the adulation her character supposedly receives. It seems hard to believe Gay Pah-ree could not produce any drag queens more fabulous than her "Victor." The idea of play-acting as a liberating experience has been done in plays from As You Like It and before, but Tennille hardly seems as emancipated as she claims to feel. She never experiences any trouble being...
