...clinics," says Morton, who is 28 and a partner in an intrepid boutique called Einstein's. "It was a chance for me to break out of Seventh Avenue and really do my own thing. The East Village is just a location, just an area, but it became a launching pad for young designers." Some of these flamboyantly monikered tyros (like Animal-X, Katpeacent, Nick Nix) could be easily confused with the local rock talent (Cargo Cult, Live Skull), which is no accident. The relationship between music and design is especially tight along these streets. The designers catch a spirit from...

European space officials watched nervously last week as a gleaming white Ariane 3 rocket awaited the final seconds of countdown on its jungle-ringed launching pad in French Guiana. While the Ariane program has generally been a success, three of its 16 missions since 1979 have ended in costly accidents. This time the European Space Agency's unmanned craft carried a payload of two satellites worth a total of $200 million: G-Star II, owned by the U.S. communications company GTE, and Brasilsat S2, a Brazilian counterpart. The countdown ran smoothly until just 4.9 seconds before ignition, but then...

...only alternative at the moment is Ariane. The consortium has been so profitable, posting earnings of $24.3 million in 1985 on revenues of $200 million, that it plans to make a public stock offering by 1988. The agency has just completed a second, $140 million launching pad on South America's northeast coast that will double Ariane's annual capacity from five missions...

...guess, there is a great deal of unnecessary filler used to pad the otherwise flat main idea. For example, too much of the plot revolves around Leslie's attempt at cooking dinner for the IRS agent and his would-be mother-in-law (what else would a wife do?). The dish, 'mung-chowder gumbo' is like much of the play's intended humor--it never materializes. Aside from the failed attempts at comedy, the play strives to excite some reaction from an otherwise limp audience with a series of sexist jokes. Lines such as "you're my kind of woman...

...commissioners also zeroed in on the icy pad conditions that prompted Rockwell to oppose the launch. While the ice was apparently unrelated to the cause of the tragedy, the commissioners regarded NASA's reaction to that opposition as more evidence of the space agency's failure to heed warnings. Viewing the pad by television from his company's launch-support center in Downey, Calif., Rocco Petrone, president of Rockwell's space transportation and systems group, had been alarmed about the ice-encrusted gantry. He telephoned Robert Glaysher, a Rockwell vice president at the Cape, and told him that Rockwell could...
