...Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has called upon Japan to revise its pacifist constitution, the country has taken a turn to the right, and political intimidation by fringe rightist groups isn't unknown. In August the house of senior legislator Koichi Kato was burned to the ground in an arson attack, in what was taken as a warning against Kato's outspoken liberal views. It remains to be seen whether Itoh's shooting was another political warning, or just a personal grudge...

...from disputed borders to deep-seated animosity over the memory of World War II. Take security. Abe has upgraded Japan's Defense Agency to a Cabinet-level ministry, sped deployment of American ballistic missile-defense systems on Japanese soil, and is pushing for a revision of the country's pacifist constitution. Last month, after Japan signed a defense agreement with Australia, Abe spoke of the two democracies' "shared destiny." ...audiences in speaking tours as Thomas Jefferson from the perspective of the year 2040, congratulating them on their achievements. “When I am enacting Mr. Jefferson, I am the embodiment of the greatest icon in American political history,” he said. In addition to its pacifist message, Jaccaci’s campaign will emphasize environmental consciousness and will be run entirely by volunteers. “The point is not the vote, the point is the message,” he said. “I’d be lucky to get one percent...
