...more about how the body's mechanisms work. For many years the biggest debate was whether the aging of cells, or senescence, is driven by hostile elements in the environment or is dictated by genes. Nowadays there is little doubt that both elements are at play. "You have genetics overlaid by environmental factors," says Dr. James Smith, co-chairman of the Huffington Center on Aging at Houston's Baylor College of Medicine. "There's something going on inside the human body to determine a maximum possible life-span of 115 to 120 years. There's a limit--but we have...
...surprise, perhaps, is not that a Warhol made only $190,000; the prices of Old Silverwig's work have been going downhill like a runaway bobsled. The true mystery is who on earth could have actually wanted to own a 31-ft. pastiche of Leonardo's Last Supper overlaid with green camouflage patterns. Is some Christian fundamentalist group planning to open a restaurant...
Perhaps this silliness/stupidity is TrippingDaisy's take on alternativity, for the albumcertainly has its share of silly moments. "Milesand Miles of Pain" recalls Guns N Roses' "NovemberRain," with its overwrought, whiny vocals. "TheMorning," an instrumental piece apparently meantto showcase the group's ecological awareness, ismarred by annoying overlaid spoken vocals whichdetract from the simple tune. Yet goofiness atleast gives the band a sense of humordistinguishing it from similar bands; be sure tolisten to the extra piece nine minutes after theend of the last tune, which is crude and strange, but certainly funny...
...symbolic gesture was worth the risks and ordered U.S. C-130 transport planes to drop food and medicine to besieged towns and villages in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before a single parcel even reached the ground, the Bosnian government in Sarajevo began plastering the city with posters of Clinton overlaid with an open hand. THANKS, BILL, read the text. THANKS, AMERICA. It was more than simple gratitude from people who still believe -- perhaps vainly -- that the U.S. will save them. "The Americans are in 100% now," said Bosnian Vice President Ejup Ganic...
...Satan--the Oneness, features an eight-minute Prince cover, a 20-second sendup of John Fogarty, and a whole lot of stuff between those extremes. If they have what can be called a "style," it is basic crashing party punk, filtered through a thick cloud of pot smoke and overlaid with whatever flourishes they feel like adding at the moment...
