...struggle has become more desperate than ever in 1988, with the five-year economic expansion losing momentum. Few economists predict an outright recession this year, but the long-running consumer spending spree is expected to taper off considerably. While consumers seem to have taken the stock-market crash in stride, they are becoming worried about the debt load they are carrying. Result: the overabundant department stores, discount outlets and specialty boutiques will be fighting ever more fiercely for consumer dollars. Says Bernard Brennan, chairman of the Montgomery Ward chain: "There's no question about the upheaval in the industry...

South African Foreign Minister Roelof ("Pik") Botha responded with something less than an outright denial of Pretoria's complicity, saying merely, "The South African government cannot be held responsible for this deed." He suggested, without offering any proof, that "serious arguments" among antiapartheid organizations may have led to September's killing. Supporters of the nonracial A.N.C. have indeed been caught up in deadly battles with other political groups, including the blacks-only Azanian People's Organization and the Zulu-based Inkatha organization. Readers are not to be blamed if they keep an eye on the silverware. People who boast of their integrity bear close watching: they may not be outright thieves, but it is a good bet that their righteousness masks a shifty character. So A Friend from England is an ironic title, unless Brookner is deluding herself -- and there is not much chance of that...

...empire had a critical weakness: it was constructed largely of passive investments in other companies' stock, rather than outright ownership of plants, equipment and other hard assets. Half of the Bell Group's pre-October assets of $1.8 billion, for instance, were made up of corporate shareholdings. "We were overexposed to the world's stock markets," Holmes a Court has conceded. Moreover, since the raider did not own controlling interest in those corporations, he was unable to tap their corporate credit lines to get infusions of new money. Said he: "Our money was tied up without getting cash flow...
