...time this year. He was Feodor Chaliapin, giant Russian basso, appearing in Boito's Mefistofele. Louder than ever boomed the great voice; the mountainous man, lithe for all his bulk, stalked, the incarnation of sinister and engaging evilness upon the boards. In one of his greatest roles he outdid himself. He suited his bones to the music of his throat, executed a physical fugue; in the Brocken scene, he boiled, surged like Hell's lava; in the kermesse scene, he spun circles about the stage, silently, slowly, like Eden's snake risen from its belly. The cast...

...mettle of Southern California. It was a dangerous thing to do. The Trojans' chests bulged under their shirts, their linemen bulged through the Syracuse line, their backfield bulged right past the Syracuse goal, twice. In addition, Trojan Hawkins kicked a field goal. The Californians clearly outdid their visitors. Only twice did they permit big John McBride of Syracuse to get near enough to try his toe at a field goal. And both these times big John was disconcerted. Aided by a dry track, and stung, perhaps, by the memories of their recent defeat, practically every Princeton athlete outdid his performance in the earlier Yale meet. Five new records were established, and four of them were by Princeton men, not to mention Hills remarkable shot put of 49 feet, which, but for a technicality on the part of the officials, would have established a new collegiate mark...

...being shown at the Stadium each day in track practice. Harvard track men have not forgotten by any means the inspiring story of Coach Bingham's last track team, which entered the Yale meet in 1922 foredoomed to complete defeat, and then, in a meet where nearly every man outdid his best previous performance, turned that defeat into the first Harvard victory since 1915, with a final score of 70 13-15 to 64 2-15. They have not forgotten and it would not be surprising to see a repetition of that famous meet once, or perhaps twice, this year...
