Some powerful policy must be adopted and followed. The State Department must carefully investigate the facts and act accordingly. If this government is satisfied that Mexico can be considered a responsible nation, then let us stop interfering. But if not, let us not be influenced by outside opinion; let us follow our duty as we see it. Threatening and then apologizing as we have done in the past not only makes the country ridiculous but prolongs an impossible state of affairs...

Radical labor was taught a lesson in the Massachusetts election, but it was not a constructive lesson. The real question of how a workingman can improve his conditions of labor has yet to be answered. At the present time the strike is the only means available. Public opinion is against the strike. So is labor; a strike is as hard on the worker as it is on anybody else. But a Labor Administration would be beer and skittles for everyone except capital and the public. Tonight in Sanders Theatre there is to be held a meeting that will be far from one of mourning, except for the part that the United States has been forced to play in all this mess. The purpose of the meeting is to crystallize public opinion in Cambridge, and to make the people who have been blocking the Treaty see that it is the will of the country that they forget their petty squabbles and peanut politics and come to an agreement that will bring the Treaty into operation as quickly as possible.
