Last week Sorrell was on the attack again, singling out one of the oldest and most venerable names in U.S. advertising. In an unwelcome bid, the Briton proposed to pay $730 million to acquire the Ogilvy Group, which owns Ogilvy & Mather, the fifth largest U.S. advertising firm. The agency, which created the Man in the Hathaway Shirt campaign and today's sleek celebrity ads for American Express, has been independent since it was founded in 1948.
