This break in an almost century-old pattern coincided with great increases in occupational earnings differentials, which have continued to grow, seemingly exponentially. It seems quaint, if not unfathomable, that just three decades ago the differentials that then existed—generally two- to fivefold in earnings between business leaders and doctors and lawyers, or five- to tenfold with professors, scientists, and public servants—were often rationalized by the country’s highest-ranking graduates as reasonable additional compensation to balance the lower standing of business jobs among their peers...

...kind of attention. According to a claim in the National Enquirer, Rachel Uchitel has been having an affair with golf star Tiger Woods since June. Uchitel and Woods have denied the claim but have been unable to prevent widespread Internet chatter, which speculates that the jet-setting 34-year-old was the source of a fight between Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren that led to the golfer's crashing his SUV outside his Florida mansion early on Nov. 27. Clemmons has a history of getting out of jail, despite an alarming criminal record. As a 17-year-old living in Arkansas, he was sentenced to consecutive prison terms totaling nearly 100 years for five different felony charges, including robbery and illegal possession of a handgun. During his courtroom appearances, he frequently exhibited unruly and violent behavior, throwing things and even lunging for a guard's handgun. Yet in 2000, citing the young age at which he had been sentenced and his newfound devotion to God, Clemmons, then 27, wrote a letter pleading for clemency from then governor Mike Huckabee...

Behind Jakarta's crisp neoclassical National Museum is the cluttered neighborhood of Kebon Jahé Kober, named for ginger farms that once occupied the area, and for a colonial cemetery some blocks away. There, in a wrinkle of ashen alleyways, the 24-year-old Pramoedya Ananta Toer - Indonesia's most prominent writer, who died in 2006 before getting the Nobel he deserved - lived with his new wife and her family after being released from prison in December 1949, just weeks before Dutch authorities recognized Indonesia's independence. After 2½ years in jail (for being caught with anti-Dutch paraphernalia...
