...when the match was over, Gonzales had plenty of cause to be worried. At the peak of his game, Lew Hoad anticipated returns like a mind reader, served with devastating power, and blasted aging Pancho off the court. 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The old king of the tennis world had a young pretender to contend with...

...libretto, by Italy's Carlo Goldoni, is a typical 18th century spoof of intriguing lovers and amateur scientists, involving a fat and foolish old father who will not let his two daughters marry suitors he disapproves of. When the old man peers through a telescope at the moon and thinks he spots a bevy of handsomely configured nymphs cavorting about in the near nude, one of his prospective sons-in-law feeds him a magic elixir that, he is told, will transport him to the wonderful moon world. The academics had nothing to do with the industrial revolution; as Corrie, the old Master of Jesus College, said about trains running into Cambridge on Sunday, 'It is equally displeasing to God and to myself...

...44th triennial convention of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod labored to keep their closely knit conservative denomination (2,200,000 members) as closely knit and conservative as ever. To further both aims, the convention re-elected Dr. John W. Behnken president for another three-year term. To 75-year-old Dr. Behnken, who has headed the synod for the past 24 years, sound and solid doctrinal agreement is the only safe basis of collaboration with any other church body; his election is a guarantee that the Missouri Synod will continue to stay outside the Lutheran World Federation, an international organization...
