Stringfellow had been talking about the same subject for years. A paraplegic veteran of World War II, he got a job as an Ogden, Utah, radio announcer. In his spare time he made scores of speeches to Mormon church gatherings and civic groups. The story, as it evolved after hundreds of repetitions, was that he had been assigned to the OSS, parachuted behind German lines with 29 other men and kidnaped a German atomic scientist named Otto Hahn. Every other member of the mission, Stringfellow said, was later killed. He said that he was captured and tortured, then escaped...

What trips off a singer's tongue often falls flat on the printed page. Yet time and again the aging (61) pixy of the Waldorf Towers flashes out with a line of verse that might be Ogden Nash at his snippiest or T. S. Eliot at his youngest. In one respect, however, Lardner was clearly right. When Porter tries to be sentimental about love (which is perhaps half the time), his music may be convincing but his words sound as invincibly phony as Porfirio Rubirosa reading Emily Dickinson to a debutante...

Last week, after a look at advance proofs of the Pogo strip, editors of the strongly anti-McCarthy Providence Journal decided that Cartoonist Kelly had gone too far. Said Managing Editor Michael J. Ogden: "Kelly may be heading into deep waters . . . We still intend to express our views on the editorial page, but we vastly prefer to keep those views on that page . . . We shall drop Pogo on any days when his McCarthy cast appears...

...pity that in The Animal Kingdom Norman Shapiro 3G should have wasted his talent on some of Ogden Nash's worst poetry. The verses are far too brief for any significant musical development, and their "humor" unrelentingly witless. Perhaps in the future Shapiro will apply his obvious skill to more worthy material...
