Nerdy Mike is a wannabe nightclub crooner. Wallflower Marcia still lives with her parents. Marcia catches Mike's act; they fall for each other and seem headed for happily ever after until Marcia discovers Mike gobbling up fresh frog roadkill. Not your average boy-meets-girl story, off-Broadway's Duet! is a sweetly loopy send-up of '50s Hollywood cliches about love. Wittily weaving such pop culture totems as Hula Hoops and the Ink Spots into a cautionary tale, it's both hip and corny, ironic and romantic. And seriously funny...

What they didn't expect was a crucifixion by the critics ("Utterly devoid of moral seriousness or artistic integrity"--New York Daily News). A sad injustice. When word leaked out last spring that off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club was planning to stage a play in which Jesus and his apostles are portrayed as modern-day gay men, Catholic groups raised a fuss. The theater's management, fearful because of some anonymous death threats, abruptly canceled the production--and then, after First Amendment advocates and a prominent chunk of the theater community protested, reversed itself, hiring a private security firm to supplement New York City cops to guard against violence.
