...when our nation’s best has come to the fore, perhaps it’s healthy to be reminded of a reason most Americans disdain politics. But it should be exposed for what it is. Petty partisanship trivializes both the gravity of the moment and the very notion of a patriotism that means something more than political posturing and one-upsmanship...

...this conviction that really drives the Kellers book. Secure in the notion that Harvard is Harvard, the Kellers dont set out to write a book that connects developments at Harvard to developments in the world at large, or tries to document the effects Harvard has on the world through its graduates, its researchers or as an institution. While the Kellers dont deny that the story of modernization at Harvard is informed by modernization on a national scale, they limit themselves from the start to events inside the ivory tower. In dealing with the turbulence of the late 1960s, for example...

That argument is premised on the notion that our politicians can be held accountable through the election process, and so therefore can be trusted to act in our best interests in situations of crisis, such as war, even if we don’t know what their actions are. This is the “I’m running on my record” argument, that says that politicians are self-interested individuals who expect to be rewarded with re-election for good behavior. This is another personal test for President Bush. His magnificent congressional address last Thursday was marked by an unapologetic and principled commitment to our national security. He reaffirmed the practical notion that nations who harbor terrorists should fear the United States. When Iran illegally develops nuclear weapons or North Korea fires test missiles over Japan that have the range to hit Hawaii, they are blatantly demonstrating that they don’t fear us. Military strikes against Osama bin Laden and the Taliban government will certainly help to reconfirm our unmatched power, but we shouldn’t stop there...

...contrast, the notion of Bush's conceding never comes up. Counting votes is seen as tantamount to anarchy. Citizens as corrupt and dexterous as Las Vegas dealers peeling from the bottom of the deck will steal the election. Never mind that manual recounts are routine and that Bush himself is asking for one in New Mexico. Courts such as that of Judge Sauls are praised, despite his refusal to examine the ballots and his applying the wrong legal standard for a recount: evidence that a different outcome was probable rather than merely placing "in doubt the result of the election...
