Their craziness is harmonious because everyone else is a creep. William Powell and Myrna Loy star, having cocktail number one at breakfast and shooting out the tree bulbs at Christmas...
Then the post-premiere reviews descended, a deluge of chic critical epithets. Nora Sayre of The Times sniffed at the film's "liberalism" and "sentimentality," she felt that non-radical leftists have enough problems without such corniness. Newsweek's Paul Zimmerman asked, "Who needs a film about a white man who teaches blacks how to think?" (But if black children are taught to think by blacks or liberated whites, aren't the rednecks the only ones who lose?) And in Time, Richard Schickel compared Conroy's relentless idealism to Chinese water torture...

When I asked McCleery if the suspicious resemblance between the relationships in his play and in A Doll's House were merely coincidental, he acknowledged that Nora and Torvald Handover were pretty strong influences on him as he created the Hardesty pair. He drew a lot from Ibsen: marital strife stemming from an imbalanced relationship, the husband's view of the wife as a subservient partner, and the wife's surreptitious assistance to the husband and his career success. But Hardesty Park lacks the pessimistic and jaded timbre of Ibsen's drama...
