When Great Big Sea takes the stage, none of the world’s problems seem to matter any more. Which is important and impressive, because Great Big Sea is from the province of Newfoundland in Canada. Newfoundland is an island off the East Coast, famous to the rest of the world mostly for being cold and far from anywhere else. ...fiercely loyal fan base. With people jumping up and down so much that the floor shook and every person singing every line from every song, it was clear that Great Big Sea does not place its stock in the casual fan, but in the devoted diehard. The band flawlessly intersperses energetic versions of traditional Newfoundland ballads with original songs. The overall effect of the album is to make the listener yearn to travel to the land of origin of these brilliant songs. With the fiddles, “Whistles high and low,” and bodhran in “Scolding Wife,” the listener can easily picture himself deep within a Newfoundland bar, hoisting a large mug of frothy mead while belting...

Gerry White of McCurdy Enterprises is preparing for that day and thinks it's not far off. He's planning to build a five-mile pipeline to carry water from Gisborne Lake to Newfoundland's southern coast, then pump it into tanker ships. White estimates it will cost less than a penny a gallon to get water from the lake to his potential buyers. Bulk water now sells for about 2[cents] per gal. in the U.S. At 66 million gal. a shipload, twice a week, that's a lot of pennies...
