America Online learns its p.r. lessons quickly. Even as it continues to deny competitors such as Microsoft, Tribal Voice and Odigo (blocked, Odigo says, six times in the past two weeks) access to its teeming Instant Messaging network, the online giant floated a proposal that would throw open the doors. Politically, the proposal is perfect for softening the scowl of trustbusters eyeing the AOL-Time Warner merger, and it's also very handy technically in that it doesn't offer any details whatsoever on how outside linkups would be allowed. That, according to AOL, is a security issue...
...what's got them in such a state? Well, on Wednesday's episode of CBS's hit show "Survivor," the islanders were seen hunting, grilling and, yes, eating the wild rats that populate the tropical paradise. The animal-rights group is reportedly "horrified" that the network would permit such inhumane treatment of the rats (which apparently are so numerous they run roughshod over sleeping cast members...
Unfortunately for CBS, logic does not seem to be a strong point among many protesters, a point that no doubt has the honchos at the Tiffany network sweating in their suits as they consider the other groups who might have a complaint as a result of the "Survivor" show...

According to a study conducted by retail-store tracker SoundScan as a supporting brief to the RIAA's copyright-infringement suit against Napster, sales at stores within a mile of Wired magazine's "Top 40 Wired Colleges" - and those near colleges that have had problems with Napster-induced network overloading - are down 13 percent. The numbers suggest that wherever you put young music lovers together with high-speed Internet access, music sales will suffer...
...This option was created by HMOS to let members see doctors outside the network, but freedom predictably comes with a higher price. An HMO with broad networks like CIGNA's, though, only has a small fraction of POS members actually seeking care outside the network...
