That well-known murmur, "not prepared," repeated by so many men in some classes, must carry with it a great deal that is disheartening and disappointing to an instructor who takes any interest at all in his sections. Because a course is easy, a fellow should not entirely neglect all preparation of lessons in the same; on the contrary, regular attention should be given to a "soft snap" for the very reason that it is "soft" and does not occupy so much time as other courses. ...will be made to bring the offending parties to justice. It is generally very hard to detect students, and, in case these escape, it is a question whether the college will pay for the lamps; it seems to me that it would be eminently short-sighted in them to neglect doing so. Two, who were unfortunately in this bad company, have been detected. One was arrested on the warrant of the mayor, and has been held in bail of $300 to appear before the grand jury. ...among the last to sustain and strengthen the martyred President of our Republic at his post of danger. It is therefore all the more surprising that last Monday should have passed by with no proper recognition by the College authorities; and we pause to ask if this implied neglect of public and patriotic duties be a wise and judicious thing. In the transept of Memorial Hall are the tablets which bear the names of Harvard's sons who fell in that bloody warfare for liberty and righteousness; they were placed there because Harvard justly desired to do her heroes...

...this means the instructors would be saved the trouble of making repeated requests to have the books handed in, and of examining and arranging them afterwards; the students would be free from the annoyance of obtaining and handing in blue-books, and from the danger of forgetfulness or neglect; while the expense would be, at the worst, no greater than at present. This is the plan adopted at most colleges, excepting that the college governments pay the expenses, and we see no reason why the present awkward and complicated system should be longer continued at Harvard...
