...Buchanan's legendary oratorical skills (admittedly superior to that of his questioners) could not completely hide his dark side at the ARCO Forum on Thursday. Buchanan stood squarely behind his remarks in praise of Hitler, his crack that Holocaust survivors have "group fantasies of martyrdom" and his support of Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk. As Neal Sher, the former director of the Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations said, "Buchanan went to bat for every Nazi war criminal in America...

...Israeli leaders are expecting the pope to elaborate, during a visit to the Holocaust memorial at Yad Vashem, on his recent apology for the Vatican's failure to speak out during World War II against the Nazi genocide. And the bar of their expectations may have been set beyond the Vatican's limit. Israel is also miffed that John Paul II will visit a Palestinian refugee camp outside Bethlehem, where they fear he may make remarks affirming the right of refugees to return to their homes - which, in the case of Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, are in Israel...

And The Crimson's phrase "the exact agent who harmed them," meaning European Jews and Japanese-Americans, reflects their plain confusion. It has been successor governments to both the Nazi German state and wartime American Roosevelt Administrations that have met reparations claims...

LENI RIEFENSTAHL has an almost Faustian knack for survival. The infamous German filmmaker, who directed the 1934 Nazi propagandist film Triumph of the Will, weathered World War II and the international ostracism that resulted from her association with the Third Reich. Now 97, she suffered relatively minor injuries last week when a helicopter in which she was riding crashed in the Sudan. She is being treated in Germany for a few broken ribs. Riefenstahl was in Africa to revisit the Nuba tribe, which she photographed during the 1970s, a project that drew criticism for its perceived objectification of tribe members...
