...know if I ever hit anyone, it was always dark," says a 50-year-old truck driver and occasional DJ who gives his name only as Hans-Holger. He is recalling the days when, as a 19-year-old border guard for the old German Democratic Republic, he was required to shoot at fellow citizens trying to flee to West Germany. Later, he himself served a 17-month prison sentence for attempting to escape the GDR. Still, he's nostalgic for the old East, which is why he's a regular at "Zur Firma," an East Berlin pub whose theme...

...district of Lichtenberg may look like most other bars in the neighborhood, but where other establishments might sport a deer head, Zur Firma has a surveillance camera. Other appointments include old wiretap devices and what appears to be a 1970s interrogation room. ...Well, in the early stages of Limbaugh's eminence, folks mangled his surname too. Not that Maddow is guaranteed to achieve Rush's power or notoriety - the 20 million weekly listeners, the zillion-dollar contract - but starting Sept. 8, she has at least a shot at correct-name recognition. That's when the 35-year-old assumes MSNBC's 9 p.m. hour, right after Keith Olbermann's popular Countdown. Radio's whip-smart, button-cute leftie (and utterly uncloseted lesbian) will have the sustained opportunity to sell her sophisticated views and perky personality to the political junkies of cable news...

...spectacular setting, caught between sea and serra, with the central hills and northern suburbs carved out of - and still split by - the Atlantic Forest. The western suburbs, meanwhile, are bordered by a swamp system whose most famous inhabitants are denoted by the area's indigenous name, Jacarepagua, or Alligator Harbor...
