Trusties, armed with shotguns, were squeezing weekly payoffs out of the "rankmen," or ordinary inmates, who worked under their supervision. Often the trusties, who lived in unlocked TV-and-refrigerator-equipped shacks, fired rifles inches over rankmen's heads simply for sport.
