...will prove irresistible, in appearance, in subtle naivete, in ease of carriage and suavity of enunciation she recalls Mrs. Fiske--a Spanish Mrs. Fiske--plus always her own enchanting, voluble self. Mr. Walton Butterfield '20, as Don Santiago, the Governor, and Mr. Harding Scholle ocC., as Don Baldomero, the Multi of Moraleda, are unforgettable characters. Manolo, the "Governor's secretary, finds in Mr. Barton Leach '22 a winning address and, except for a certain insistent springiness of motion, an excellent lover. Mr. C. S. Howard's otherwise admirable Marquis of Torrelodones is marred somewhat by an irritating resemblance...

...scenery for the play is of a very unusual character. Special attention has been given to the reproducing of local color and atmosphere. The sunwashed fronts of the houses, the multi-colored awnings, everything combines to convey an impression of languor and drowsiness which is essentially Spanish. The keynote of the play is struck by the admirable choice of colors, pinks and yellows predominating. Bright tiling is much in evidence, the squares being made up of vivid reds, blues, yellows, and blacks. The result is striking but at the same time one wonders how so many strong colors could have...

George M. Cohan used to sing through his nose and glorify his country. Hodge talks through his nose, but he, too, glorifies the country--the rural regions of it. In this play he is, as usual, just a plain, easy-going country chap, who can faze a multi-millionaire with a shrug of the shoulder.
