Only three numbers were impressive. They were "Chop-Chop" featuring a beautiful clarinet solo by Eari Bostic, Dinah Washington's rendition of Ellington's "Concerto for Cootie' now retitled "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me," and Hampton's superb vibraphone work ably backed by the Symphony strings on "Moonglow." There is no denying Lionel's artistry on this instrument and it is unfortunate that he neglected it most of the evening in favor of one finger piano solos and noisy drum exhibitions...

When up in New York's Harlem a short time ago, I wandered into a session at the Moonglow on 145th Street (highly recommended!) which had some of the best orchestra piano I had heard in a long time. Asked the guy where he learned his style, to which he replied, "My name's Willy Gans, I can sho' play a mess of piano, and I learnt it all from Fats Waller." Jack was playing hot trombone when Tommy Dorsey was playing licks on a milk bottle. Listen to "Texas Tea Party" (Columbia 31671) of "Moonglow" (Columbia 2927D, all made with the old Goodman band, to hear what Teagarden can do with a trombone. Thus while the quality of the band as a whole is an unknown, inspiring jazz is a certainty next Friday night...
