...been more than 30 years since Carol Burnett appeared on Broadway. What lured her back is this play about plays and players, Moon over Buffalo, by Ken Ludwig. His comedy Lend Me a Tenor was a Broadway hit in 1989 and moved on to a spate of international productions. Like Tenor, Moon over Buffalo is fast and farcical. Burnett veers winningly between squawking moments of indignation and blazing, face-overspilling grins. Bosco veers in another way. He gets to play most of the second act in a state of delirious intoxication, and does a lovely job of conveying the light...
...full moon was out, a couple of nights before Halloween 1993, when Marshall Chapman and her band, the Love Slaves, played at the Tennessee State Prison for Women. That might explain the kindred electricity between the veteran bar balladeer and her captive audience--women doing time for the kinds of misbehavior people write country tunes about. The resultant live album, It's About Time...(Margaritaville Records), is sad, strong stuff, and may be the most potent peek into the connection between lock-up desperation and good country blues since Johnny Cash played Folsom Prison...
Nearing 1 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 3., just beyond the French navy's 12-mile exclusion zone at Mururoa, the South Pacific atoll where France plans to test nuclear bombs. Light wind. Half-moon. Waves from a far-off storm swell under La Rebaude, a broken-engined, radio-dead ketch owned by Greenpeace. The crew hands two black-painted sea kayaks over the rail. They are then tethered to a Zodiac inflatable boat already pitching in the water...

Other exhibits are devoted to important rock precursors, such as blues greats Lead Belly and Howlin' Wolf. There are plenty of intriguing curios on display as well--such as the Who drummer Keith Moon's grade school report card, saying he "is inclined to play the fool." There is flair in even the smallest detail: the building's ATMS look like jukeboxes. Mostly, however, the museum rises above Hard Rock Cafe-style gimmickry by showing respect for the music and its origins. Still, rock...
...LONG LIVE THE DEAD bumper stickers in Merry Prankster green and creating a huge circle of drum players and mourner-celebrants. One sign read, "Fare thee well, fare thee well, we miss you more than words can tell." In Manhattan's Central Park, 700 Deadheads gathered under the full moon at the memorial to another fallen idol, John Lennon. In Washington, where more than 300 souls converged on the Lincoln Memorial, Rush Jones, 25, spoke his anxiety in prime Dead style. Garcia's death marked "the end of a chapter of my life," he said. "Not with...
