...Mona Karim, who plays Cenci's daughter, Beatrice, falls all too often into this trap. While Shelley's play is intended to be a tragedy, Karim fails to convey believable anger in her accusations. There is so little emotion in her portrayal of Beatrice that when she reveals the incest forced upon her by her father, one may be uncertain of exactly what has happened to her. Were it not for Shelley's plot summary in the opening scene, the main tension of the play might go undiscovered...
...Daybreak clinic advertises as a pregnancy counseling center but actually when a woman goes in there she's confronted with anti-abortion propaganda--false medical things such as abortion causes sterility," said Mona Karim '93, a Students for Choice member. ...Vicksburg, Miss., being an American black in Paris -- and reveling in it -- is a cachet that opens doors. His logo is a grinning golliwog. On promotion tours he startles fans by handing out 3-in. plastic black doll pins as mementos. His first Louvre show, a spoof on the Mona Lisa, included such numbers as "Jungle Lisa loves Tarzan" (decollete leopard-print gowns) and "Moona Lisa" (Plexiglas-bubble headgear and silver- star-studded dresses). At his second Louvre show, two weeks ago, the crowd shrieked and whistled its approval for such outfits as "Cowboys" (fringed jackets and pony-skin patterns...
...curator's fault. It is built into the career itself. Warhol's paintings came out of a culture of mass production and reproduction, and have been run back through it so widely and often that they contain very few surprises. With a few piercing exceptions, they seem generic. His Mona Lisas are by now as famous as Leonardo's, especially for people who don't care much for old art. (Except that, for a lot of the audience, they are old art -- mysterious icons of the remote '60s.) On the whole, the sense of expansion and refreshment one feels...
...water. The airport control tower was battered out of commission, and until Thursday air traffic consisted only of military transports carrying relief supplies from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Jamaica's Caribbean neighbors. The hospital in Mandeville lost its roof, and the University Hospital of the West Indies in Mona was severely damaged. With water supplies contaminated, there is fear of an outbreak of cholera, dysentery and other diseases. Property losses will probably run to more than $500 million...
