...Modern Language electives are large, junior German for example having 96 men, and junior French 76 men. The scientific electives are comparatively small, the largest being Botany, with 33 juniors, and the smallest Dr. J. D. Dana's elective in Geology with 2 seniors. Take this with Prof. Whitney's Sanskrit elective of 1 student, and the fact that some of the greatest professors often have the smallest electives becomes very visible. This kind of specialism, however, suggests another quite different kind which has not been very generally noticed, but which, nevertheless, is very prevalent here at Harvard and elsewhere. Reference is had to the "grind," and the "swell" (or, to be more modern, the "dude"), and the "professional" athlete. All men, who are properly called by any one of these names, and to whom any other can be applied only with a very slight degree of correctness, are specialists; and their specialism has to be attended with great injury to themselves as well as to the general interests of the college...
Prof Paine's historical concert last evening treated of the modern instrumental composers, and was illustrated by a trio by Raff. and a violin sonota by Rubenstein. The performers were Messrs. Listemann, Jonas, and Perobo. Next week will be given the last of the series...
