UBRICK zaps the audience. The music keeps you awake or makes some obvious comic point, but it is too strained to be effective counterpoint to the narrative (as in 2001), and the entire mode of storytelling--a mosaic held together by the director's editing--is so self-propelled that nothing but action or obligatory dialogue becomes an integral part of the story. John Barry's production design and Russell Hagg's art direction drop sexual decorations and phallic sculptures in the midst of sterile modern architecture: a vain attempt to indict a Zeitgeist through innuendo. ...things past; glimpses of the two as children show Giorgio even then a shy admirer of the "private pupil" Micol, while she plays the seductress in their game of communication through glances. A sudden downpour dispells the sunshine of their memories, and taking refuge in an old carriage, their mode of contact threatens to become physical. But Giorgio is too slow in making this transition from childhood innocence. Paralyzed by the enticing new light in Micol's eyes, he can only stare back embarrassedly, until she runs away in disgust. There are, no doubt, numerous grounds for criticism of Professor Herrnstein's masterly essay--as he would be the first to grant--but it must never be forgotten--especially by those who grasp the delicate status of intellectual freedom in modern society--that the mode of criticism or opposition is as important as the criticism itself, if not more so. I believe that the mode of criticism chosen by the opponents of Herrnstein's article is not only unacceptable in a university community, but, what is worse, it plays into the hands of numerous detractors of reason, on both...
