...rowing a 12-ft. boat in New York City's Central Park. Awaiting us in Arizona, though, was not a modest little craft. Nope, I'd be piloting a 60-ft., 15-ton double-decker leviathan, dubbed the Admiral by the rental company because it was the largest model in its fleet. What had I been thinking? Sometimes innovators don't even recognize the true import of their findings. In 1660s Germany, Magdeburg Mayor Otto von Guericke tries to solve the riddle of a compass needle that doesn't always point (as people thought it should) at the Pole Star. ...macro scale, AeroVironment designed and built the Pathfinder, a six-engine, battery-powered, unmanned plane with a 121-ft. wingspan that in 1998 flew to an altitude of 80,400 ft., higher than any propeller plane has ever flown. The Centurion, a successor model with an enormous wingspan of 206 ft., is using solar cells, and, says MacCready, "we're expecting to fly it to 100,000 ft. in late spring." The ultimate descendant of these craft, the Helios, will have a fuel-cell energy-storage system to provide power for flying at night. That will enable the plane...
