...crooked spieler goes to work for a girl-proprietor who is trying to run an honest show, the action moves ahead faster and faster through beautifully dovetailed sequences to a climax in which the spieler, armed with a tent stake, fights his way out of a battle with a mob of "rubes." Fred Kohler, Alan Hale, graceful Renee Adoree and a competent minor cast replace with simple, effective acting the sentimentality common to this type of picture. Best shot: the quiet, sinister mob jostling in the midway...

There were many possible reasons for the massacre but only one motive-jungle justice. Chief Gangster Alphonse ("Scarface Al") Capone's West Side mob was under suspicion. Tony Lombardo, Capone's good friend, wilted last summer under a spray of bullets at Madison and Dearborn Streets (TIME, Sept. 17). And a shipment of Canadian whiskey from Detroit's "Purple Gang" to Capone was hijacked last fortnight, presumably by Moran...
...Second is the matter of one government's claims against another. This has been since time immemorial a fertile ground for strife. A foreigner, for example, is lynched by a mob in America. What is his government to do? Make objections through diplomatic channels, of course, and seek redress in the customary manner. But what if our officials politely but firmly fall to be blamed, or that any compensation is necessary? Then the consequences are not always happy! Were there a recognized universal law which could be applied, much time could be saved and dangerous complications averted...
