Unfortunately, a few episodes are offensively unfunny. The scene where Antoine pulls a cucumber out of one of Magdalena's hidden orifices as she lies on his examining table is unforgivable. The joke is adolescent at best, a mindless exercise in misogyny at worst, lacking artistic motivation or worth in either case...

...real life, the "box of chocolates" line is seldom enough. And then Gumpism risks devolving quickly into a mindless, heartless conservatism where, if the next guy over is having a rough time of it, it's not because America has failed to grapple with the real and complex problems that face it -- it's probably because he isn't sufficiently upbeat. Or not decent enough. Lacks family values. Reads insufficiently of the Book of Virtues...

...popular Vincent Youman tune "Tea for Two." As the story goes, Shostakvich orchestrated the theme in 40 minutes after a challenge by a friend. Chintz turns into schmaltz at this point; the listener is treated to a seemingly endless (actually only three-minute-33-second) passing of the mindless theme from section to section. The best advice here is to listen for the melding of one texture into the next. Shostakovich manages to keep within the same balance of bass and treble parts, though he sometimes bursts into a gaudy burlesque...
