...Vice President to Boston. What justification is there, then, for directing such vituperative abuse at the Harvard Republican Club? Mr. Schoen's clumsy attempt to demonstrate his ideological machismo is as inane as it is pointless. The fondness for such rhetoric is one of the attributes that distinguishes mindless barbarians from civilized individuals, and Mr. Schoen owes his readers either an apology or a confession that his sympathies lie with the former group. Eddie Egan, the super-narc who overrode all authority in his attacks on drug traffic in The French Connection, is nowhere in sight in The Seven-Ups. Like the previous film, and Bullitt, this is a Phil D' Antoni production, mindless and numbing. D'Antoni is more careful at limiting his hero's powers in this second-effort: delivering the further exploits of Egan's former partner, Sonny Grosso, he lends Grosso's fictional counterpart, Buddy Mannucci, an institutional weight that Egan lacked. Mannucci heads a special plain-clothes corps aimed at gaining arrests (by unorthodox means) of men wanted...
Sniper Shots. Though many independents stayed home or picketed peacefully, the week leading up to the settlement exploded in violence as the more mindless owner-drivers tried to sweep the highways clear of trucks by intimidating nonstriking truckers. One driver, Claudie Nix, 50, was fatally shot in his moving truck near Bridgeville, Del.; earlier, another driver was killed when a large rock was thrown at his windshield and his truck crashed. Other truckers have been hospitalized with gunshot wounds; the most recent victim was Lawrence Huff, 48, who was wounded in the stomach by a sniper as he drove...
Ionesco described the play as an anti-Nazi drama. But, more broadly, it exposes the collective hysteria that lies beneath the thin veneer of reason covering modern society. The play is still more complex than a simple attack on mindless conformity. It questions what resistance to conformity really means. Because he resists rhinoceritis, Stanley appears to be a hero at the end. But there is an ambiguous quality to his heroism. When he realizes he is the only human left in the town, his resistance to the disease momentarily weakens. He begins to think it might be nice...
...anomaly in the town. But they become more and more appealing to the people. The human beings yearn to become rhinoceroses. The comfort of conformity becomes more attractive than the responsibilities of individualism. So one by one, the people of the town succumb to the lure of the mindless pact. Even Stanley's saccharine girl friend Daisy (Karen Black) and his best friend John (Zero Mostel) go over to the side of the rhinos. Only Stanley resists. He becomes the anomaly...
