...blame them? The new millennium has barely begun, and Gen Xers are already trying to turn back the clock. Weary of staring at computer screens all day and bored with the monochrome sweater sets at Banana Republic, they have turned to an old craft for satisfaction. Four million people, mostly women in their 20s and 30s, began knitting last year alone, according to the Craft Yarn Council of America. A recent "Knit Out" in New York drew 7,000 people to check out the latest in fashions and supplies, more than double the previous year. Hundreds of websites, such...
...stadiums sometimes replace local ads with national ones in the television coverage. Partly, this may be a spinoff from the self-important millennium, which spilled inarticulate little anxieties here and there in the mind. The anticipation of the world crossing a line and changing irreversibly - transformed into an alien place where nature is haywire and old rules (even familiar cycles of seasons and temperatures) no longer apply - all that seems unofficially confirmed by wild meteorological swings...
WORLD'S WACKIEST Y2K GLITCHES! Fears of global computer meltdown proved unfounded, but that didn't stop the media's relentless quest for millennium-bug stories. Our pick of last week's reports...
