European investigators are worried that the year-end holiday season will bring another round of al-Qaeda terrorism. Several major year-end assaults have been averted over the past few years, including "millennium bomber" Ahmed Ressam's foiled plot against the Los Angeles airport in 1999 and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid's bungled effort to bring down a Paris-to-Miami jet last Dec. 22. Khalfaoui has also been linked to Doha associate Rabah Kadre, arrested by police in London last month under Britain's Terrorism...

In 1999, Amazon.com customers chose it as the greatest book of the millennium. The Tolkien revival began when the Internet bubble was bursting, the market for consumer electronics was nosediving like Harry Potter chasing the Golden Snitch, and America's long summer romance with technology was fizzling. "Change and technology are so pervasive a part of daily life that for the most part there...

...campaign has taken a hit. On Nov. 24, Chung Mong Joon, the popular head of South Korea's soccer association, pulled out of the race, winnowing what was largely a three-horse contest down to a field of two: Lee versus Roh Moo Hyun, candidate of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party and would-be heir to Kim, whose five-year term as President ends in February...
