...freshmen through the dark house, amid weird groans and rattling chains. When they came to the kitchen they briefly flashed a light on the hideous but familiar form that hung limply and moaned softly. All the freshmen agreed that the hanging man was the scariest spook of all. Midway in the fun Mrs. Stevens slipped into the kitchen with her camera to get a picture. She called to Sallee. There was no answer. She turned on her flashlight. Somehow, as he had moved his feet on the littered floor, Principal Sallee had slipped; the noose had worked up from...
...story in the issue, John Mautner's An Enchantment, which very likely will not produce that effect in the reader. The story, as well as its component parts, partakes of a diarrheic length. If the author is interested in attracting readers, he should take the advice he offers almost midway through the story... "but enough is enough! This is not a brochure for a hiking club." "An Enchantment" is built around an intriguing situation for exploring personality, but loses effectiveness because the narrator is very little described. In between, he did some calisthenics, tried a few yards of roadwork to "unlazy" his legs and continued to catch Floyd's furious punches. Midway in the tenth round, Referee Ruby Goldstein called off the bloody farce. While Hurricane was hauled to the hospital to be patched up by a team of urologists, neurologists and a plastic surgeon, Patterson started work for his next fight. In three weeks he is scheduled to meet Olympic Heavyweight...
...Argentine electorate, 9,726,529 strong, was puzzling its way down a noisy and crowded political midway. With balloting for a constitutional assembly only a fortnight away, Buenos Aires was bright with posters, clamorous with speeches, angry with sporadic fistfights. At week's end there were 56 parties in the race, and new splinter groups and alliances were born by the day, few of them with any hint of a program. An awesome total of 2,183 candidates was competing for the 205 assembly seats...
