...thoughtful piece, full of issues about love and communication and personal history affecting the present. But at only ten pages or so, it would have been nice to see it developed a bit more. Pekar's self-absorption can turn drama into mere exposition. In one case he fills almost an entire panel with text, explaining his lack of communication with Danielle. At the bottom he looks at us, as if in conversation, while in the background, home from school, she runs up the stairs. It says more than it means to, I think...
...character of Sophia, so integral to the first half of the movie, becomes nearly invisible and irrelevant for the remainder of the running time. Interestingly, these quibbles all involve the women of the movie, making a statement that racing is a man’s world, and women are mere functionaries, objects and ornaments to be lusted and sought after, but never truly needed. ...especially London, where centuries of history cry out for interpretation. Says San Francisco travel agent Charlie Graham, who touts walks for his clients: "To meander about aimlessly, even with a guidebook or acoustic guide, can be a stupid waste of time." Guided walkers, though, become more participants than mere observers. "The tours take you down alleyways where you'd never dream of going," says 10-year veteran walker Joan Rubenstein, a retired ad saleswoman...
