President Clinton's pollster, Stan Greenberg, has told Democratic incumbents to run on the strength of their own accomplishments and to downplay their connections to Clinton, according to a memo uncovered by the New York Times. Greenberg's "Strategic Guide to the 1994 Election," which the Times said was sent to a few Democratic leaders and White House officials a month ago, figures that the Dems have a better shot at winning if they stick to local issues, like crime. "This is not about improving Bill Clinton's image," he wrote. "This is a winning agenda...
...launched a nationwide investigation of anti-abortion activists who are intent on attacking clinics, according to The New York Times. This represents a significant change for the Feds, who are usually reluctant to get involved in abortion-related violence. The Times cited a confidential FBI memo indicating that the Bureau was looking into whether or not anti-abortion activists are conspiring to commit violence at clinics. If so, they could be busted under the same laws that put mobsters behind bars. In January, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal anti-racketeering RICO law can be used against anti...
Comptroller of the Currency Eugene Ludwig, the nation's top bank regulator, wrote in a memo that surfaced last week that President Clinton had approached him for "advice and counsel" regarding the "legal-regulatory issues relative to the Whitewater matter." Ludwig says he responded that it would be "impermissible" for him to give such advice. The White House retorted that the only information Clinton sought from Ludwig, an old college pal, was the names of real estate experts who could write sympathetic articles about Whitewater issues...
Still, one document leaked as the hearings were about to begin begged new questions about what Bentsen and other Treasury officials knew and when they knew it. In a memo from Hanson dated Sept. 30 that is in the hands of congressional probers, she writes of press inquiries about the investigation and continues, "I have spoken with the Secretary ((Bentsen)) and also Bernie Nussbaum," who was then White House counsel. The investigation, into the failure of Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan, which was owned by Clinton friend and Whitewater partner James McDougal, was conducted by the Resolution Trust Corporation, a federal...
Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman, to whom Hanson's memo was addressed, could land in more trouble too. He has admitted that he gave White House officials a "heads up" briefing on the RTC probe in February, but at first did not acknowledge knowing of any earlier meetings. Even before her Sept. 30 memo turned up, however, Hanson reportedly told investigators that Altman not only knew about similar meetings in September and October 1993 but actually ordered them. Those reports have touched off rumors that Altman, once thought likely to succeed Bentsen at Treasury, is considering resigning. Sources close...
