...merely serving as an excuse for Stoppard to play with conventions of the stage. Set in a Gothic mansion on the moors, a group of caricatures expound upon their social problems--but somewhere outside, an escaped criminal lurks. The players include a dimwitted blonde (Susan Kelly), a melodramatic maiden (Meg Schellenberg) and a gruff crippled veteran (Wise) who play cards endlessly. Into the scene comes a stranger (Goldfarb) who seems to fit the description of the fugitive. Who is he, and what will happen...
...Meg, it seemed, married a man named Raymundo de Larrain in 1977. She was 80 years old, he was 47--it was what you might call a summer/dead-of-winter romance. He was a Chilean ballet director; she a toothless, crippled hag worth millions. But he loved her, he said. ...stars are not to blame, though they are all about ten years older than their characters in the play. Diane Keaton is Lenny, the spinster with the shriveled ovary and a motherly protectiveness toward her younger sisters that too often expresses itself in shrill hectoring. Jessica Lange is Meg, the singer, free spirit and hot number, who has come home to suture the family wounds and relive an affair with her old beau Doc Porter (nicely played by Lange's real beau Sam Shepard). Sissy Spacek is Babe, under arrest for the attempted murder of her husband, who had discovered...
