Lieberman is so friendly, in fact, he may turn out to be perfect for a running mate's most important role: attack dog. "I think Joe will be very tough," says Daley. "He has the ability to be aggressive without being nasty"--something Gore, with his reputation for low blows, doesn't share. "Anything [Gore] says about Bush, Texas or the record gets one of these, 'Oh, there he goes again, being mean and nasty and dirty,'" Daley says. "Lieberman can be as direct and as aggressive and will be viewed differently because he is not considered a negative campaigner...

...does Al Gore. That's one reason Lieberman found himself in Nashville last week being introduced by Gore as his running mate. Quite a stretch from four years ago, when Lieberman spoke at the Democratic Convention but was wrongly introduced as a Senator from New Jersey. There's a funny political symmetry at work this year. Lieberman offered a homemade prayer in Hebrew. "We thank God for this miracle upon us, through a wonderful person like Al Gore and through God's will." The family repeated the prayer in English, says Marcia, "just so we could hear it again. God was smiling on us." If the smiles keep coming and if the Gore-Lieberman ticket wins...

...roll-call vote that will formally nominate her father. The gauzy biographical film touting Gore as the man from Carthage will be vetted by her; her pen will edit the remarks of both the Vice President and Tipper Gore. And when Senator Joseph Lieberman, Gore's running mate, shows up to take his place, you can be certain that she weighed in on the decision to put him there...
